Hydrogen hulls take shape in Indian yards

August 14, 2025 |

In India, Ship Technology reports two shipyards have begun work on vessels powered by green hydrogen, the country’s first. Cochin Shipyard and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders are each constructing a fuel-cell ship using homegrown technology, part of a government plan to cut maritime emissions and foster alternatives to fossil fuel.

Backed by ₹1.15 billion ($13.1 million) from the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the project will first retrofit existing ships before building refueling capacity at major ports. V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Tuticorin has proposed a 750 cubic meter green methanol bunkering facility, with Deendayal and Paradip ports expected to follow as hydrogen hubs.

The Shipping Corporation of India is among the partners, with officials saying the effort will position India in the emerging trade of green hydrogen production and export.

The push comes alongside a ₹500 billion ($5.8 billion) upgrade of inland waterways, tying low-carbon ambitions to the country’s wider transport network.
