In the UAE, Hercules Tanker Management announced their vessel Mount Kibo was supplied with B30 marine biofuel in the Strait of Gibraltar by Hercules Sky, a sister vessel operated by energy partner Peninsula, marking HTM’s first biofuel delivery as part of its strategy to align with FuelEU Maritime regulations and new global fuel standards introduced at MEPC 83.
The bunkering operation involved a B30 blend—30% biofuel and 70% conventional marine fuel—intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and accelerate the maritime sector’s shift toward lower-carbon propulsion.
“This operation carried out in the Strait of Gibraltar aligns with the recent discussions at MEPC 83, where key decisions were made to advance maritime decarbonisation, including new fuel standards and a global pricing mechanism for emissions,” HTM said in its statement.
The initiative also supports FuelEU Maritime, a European regulation mandating cleaner fuels for ships calling at EU ports beginning in 2025. The regulation is part of the European Union’s Fit for 55 package targeting a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
“This marks the first biofuel supply to the HTM fleet, showcasing our commitment to sustainable growth,” the company added. Further deployments are expected as HTM expands its alternative fuel use.
