Hong Kong conducts first LNG bunkering with simultaneous cargo handling

June 11, 2025 |

In Hong Kong, at Kwai Tsing Container Terminals, CLPe and CNOOC supplied approximately 10,000 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas to Hapag-Lloyd’s Hanoi Express during cargo operations noted as the largest LNG bunkering to date in Hong Kong and the first to combine fueling and loading simultaneously, marking a milestone in the city’s green marine fuel transition.

The operation, conducted by the Haiyang Shiyou 301 which is the world’s largest LNG bunkering vessel with a capacity of 30,000 cubic meters, was completed in under 24 hours. It supported the Hong Kong SAR Government’s Action Plan on Green Maritime Fuel Bunkering and aligned with the recently enacted Shipping Legislation.

“The success of this operation was made possible by the joint efforts of LNG supplier CNOOC and LNG bunker seller CLPe,” said Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan. “Conducting bunkering during cargo operations… truly delivers a synergistic effect.”

CLP Holdings CEO T.K. Chiang noted, “This pioneering collaboration… strengthens our ties with CNOOC… and enhances the entire ecosystem.”

The operation serves as a pilot for the CLPe-CNOOC joint venture announced in November 2024 and advances Hong Kong’s role as a green marine fuel hub in the Greater Bay Area.
