Höegh Moonlight named in Gothenburg as sixth Aurora-class enters service

September 3, 2025 |

In Sweden, on September 3 at the Port of Gothenburg, Höegh Autoliners named Höegh Moonlight, the sixth vessel in its twelve-ship Aurora Class program. Jenny Westermark of Volvo Group served as sponsor, christening the vessel with a bottle break while Volvo’s cargo stood staged on deck.

Built for 9,100 car equivalent units, Höegh Moonlight follows Höegh Sunrise, named in June at Omaezaki Port. The first eight Auroras, including Moonlight, are LNG dual-fuel with ammonia-ready tanks integrated into the design. The last four, due from 2027, will operate on ammonia from launch.

Each vessel is part of Höegh’s effort to reduce emissions across deep-sea transport, with the class estimated to deliver a 58 percent cut in emissions per car moved. The series sits at the core of the company’s 2040 net zero plan.
