In Korea, HMM signed a research agreement with Korean Register and four Hanwha Group companies to develop a zero-carbon propulsion system for container ships. The system will combine ammonia-powered gas turbines with marine fuel cells to enable carbon-free operation.
The collaboration includes Hanwha Power Systems, Hanwha Ocean, Hanwha Aerospace, and Hanwha Systems. HMM will provide operational requirements. Korean Register will handle technical verification and classification.
The project will cover hybrid configurations with batteries, feasibility analysis, and new hull designs suited to the propulsion concept. HMM said the initiative supports its revised net-zero target, now set for 2045.
