HD Korea Shipbuilding wins 2.5 trillion won in orders as sanctions shift demand from China

May 7, 2025 |

In Korea, EBN News Center reports HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering secured ₩2.5 trillion in orders for 22 container ships from shipping lines in Oceania and Asia, as U.S. sanctions on Chinese shipbuilders and new IMO carbon rules drive demand toward Korean-built vessels with dual-fuel engines and emissions control systems.

The contracts include four 8,400 TEU LNG dual-fuel ships, ten 2,800 TEU vessels, and six 1,800 TEU ships, to be delivered by HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard and HD Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries by mid-2028. An HD Korea Shipbuilding official said, “We’ve secured a fair number of additional contracts for container ships, so we expect to achieve our order target for the year without difficulty,” adding, “Due to demand for eco-friendly fleet conversions and the U.S. port fee issue, inquiries for newbuilds from global carriers are rapidly increasing.”

Hanwha Ocean stated, “Container ships are one of the vessel types directly affected by USTR sanctions,” and said it would “closely monitor any changes in procurement strategies by major shipping lines.” According to the report, Korea, with its world-class technological capabilities, is emerging as a leading alternative destination for ship orders shifting away from China.
