In the United Kingdom, Riviera Maritime News reports HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Engine & Machinery Division signed a contract to supply 18 methanol dual-fuel engines to Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding in China for construction of 2,400-TEU feeder vessels for Taiwan’s Evergreen Line. The contract marks Hyundai Heavy’s first order for methanol dual-fuel engines for feeder ships, building on experience gained from producing over 300 four-stroke methanol engines for ultra-large containerships.
In addition to this contract, Hyundai received type-approval for its ammonia dual-fuel engine, from seven classification societies—Korean Register, ABS, Bureau Veritas, DNV, ClassNK, LR, and RINA—after successful tests in Ulsan, South Korea. The engine, described as “the world’s first ammonia high-pressure direct injection engine,” features selective catalytic reduction to control nitrogen oxides and unburned ammonia emissions.
The company plans to use ammonia engines on various commercial vessels and for land-based power generation.
