HD Hyundai, Tampa Ship partner on U.S.-built LNG containerships

June 26, 2025 |

In Florida, HD Hyundai and Tampa Ship LLC, part of the Edison Chouest Offshore group, signed a memorandum of understanding in Tampa to build medium-sized LNG dual-fuel containerships in the U.S., with deliveries expected by 2028 and support from Hyundai in design, procurement, and shipbuilding technology.

The collaboration includes technical assistance from HD Hyundai on block fabrication and infrastructure investment, as well as a broader goal to strengthen U.S. shipbuilding capacity. Tampa Ship is one of five ECO-operated shipyards in the country.

HD Hyundai Vice President Choi Hannae and ECO Executive Vice President Dino Chouest attended the signing ceremony.

According to Clarksons Research, only three 3,600 TEU-class containerships were ordered from U.S. yards between 2022 and 2024. The companies aim to address this gap and explore future joint work beyond containerships, including port infrastructure and other fleet types.

“The United States is a strong ally and an important business partner for us,” an HD Hyundai official said. “Through our collaboration with ECO, we aim to actively support U.S. efforts to revitalize its shipbuilding industry and strengthen national security.”

The agreement follows HD Hyundai’s recent partnerships with U.S. defense and academic institutions.
