HD Hyundai Mipo to build four ammonia-fueled gas carriers for Trafigura

May 21, 2025 |

In Korea, HD Hyundai Mipo announced on May 19, 2025, that it will build four 45,000 m³ liquefied gas carriers for multinational shipping company Trafigura, following a finalized specification change to a contract signed in April 2023. The ships will carry LPG, ammonia, and vinyl chloride monomer, with deliveries scheduled through 2028.

The vessels will operate on either conventional marine fuel or ammonia, which the company said “does not emit carbon dioxide at all during combustion.” Each will also be equipped with selective catalytic reduction systems and multiple safety technologies.

This follows HD Hyundai Mipo’s earlier construction of the world’s first ammonia-propelled LPG carriers in 2023 and expands its portfolio of alternative-fuel vessels, including methanol-fueled container ships and Korea’s first liquefied CO₂ carriers.

Ammonia is being closely watched by HD Hyundai Mipo as a commercially viable, carbon-free marine fuel.
