In Korea, News1 reports HD Hyundai and Denmark’s A.P. Moller-Maersk signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly test autonomous navigation and decarbonization technologies over six months aboard Maersk methanol-powered container ships built by HD Hyundai, advancing cooperation on ship retrofits and global logistics integration.
The trial will apply Avikus’s HiNAS navigation optimization system and HD Hyundai Marine Solution’s AI-based fuel efficiency platform OCEANWISE to verify reductions in fuel use and carbon emissions. Both firms aim to expand collaboration in areas such as dual-fuel conversions, solid oxide fuel cells, and cargo load maximization.
Since 2021, Maersk has ordered 19 methanol-fueled vessels from HD Hyundai, including the world’s first ultra-large methanol container ship delivered last year.
The agreement also includes logistics cooperation. Maersk’s East-West Network and integrated freight services—including air, land, and warehouse infrastructure—will be applied to HD Hyundai subsidiaries such as HD Hyundai Site Solution and Marine Solution, with broader rollout planned.
“This partnership with Maersk will combine decarbonization and logistics innovation to build a sustainable marine logistics network,” said HD Hyundai Senior Vice Chairman Chung Ki-sun. “We will rapidly advance the world’s leading shipbuilding technologies with a focus on safety, carbon reduction, and efficiency.”
