HD Hyundai and Hanwha open U.S. shipbuilding talks amid supply chain push

May 14, 2025 |

In Maryland, Green Post Korea reports from May 11 to 14, senior executives from HD Hyundai and Hanwha Ocean joined the 2025 SelectUSA Investment Summit to discuss U.S.-Korea cooperation on shipbuilding with Trump administration officials, exploring new business models and supply chain restructuring, though no specific investment amount was disclosed.

According to industry sources, the Korean delegation—attending by official invitation of the U.S. Department of Commerce—includes Hanwha Ocean CEO Chung In-sub and HD Hyundai adviser Shin Jong-kye. The summit marks the first high-level contact on shipbuilding between the two nations since President Trump took office in January.

The talks included proposals for joint shipbuilding models to meet U.S. energy and defense needs, with the Commerce Department organizing a dedicated shipbuilding roundtable. Trump has made shipyard revitalization a policy priority, declaring in April, “We’re going to spend a lot of money on shipbuilding.”

While the U.S. builds under 1% of the world’s merchant ships, China builds nearly 50%. “HD Hyundai and Hanwha’s cooperation talks are not just about vessel orders,” one official said, “but the start of a realignment in global supply chains and technology standards.”
