Hapag-Lloyd invests $4 billion in low-carbon fleet

November 6, 2024 |

In Germany, Hapag-Lloyd has announced a massive $4 billion investment to bolster its container ship fleet with 24 new eco-efficient vessels, set to be delivered between 2027 and 2029. This strategic expansion involves two contracts with leading Chinese shipyards: Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group and New Times Shipbuilding Company Ltd.

The order includes twelve ships from Yangzijiang, each boasting a capacity of 16,800 TEU, aimed at enhancing existing service capabilities, and twelve New Times-built 9,200 TEU ships replacing vessels nearing the end of their lifecycle. These new ships will be equipped with state-of-the-art low-emission, high-pressure liquefied gas dual-fuel engines.

These vessels are also designed to be ammonia-ready, aligning with Hapag-Lloyd’s commitment to the Paris Agreement’s 1.5-degree target. ““This investment is one of the largest in the recent history of Hapag-Lloyd, and it represents a significant milestone for our company as it pursues the goals of its Strategy 2030, such as to grow while also modernizing and decarbonizing our fleet.” said Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd.
