In Qatar, at LNG2026 in Doha from February 2 to 5, Hanwha Group presented a large vessel propulsion concept combining a 100 percent ammonia gas turbine with hydrogen fuel cells to generate onboard electric power, targeting carbon free operation for deep sea shipping.
The system eliminates pilot fuel and relies entirely on ammonia combustion to produce electricity, which then drives propulsion motors. Hanwha Ocean said it aims to apply the platform to large LNG carriers and large container ships by 2028.
The announcement came as Qatar reiterated plans to expand LNG production capacity from 77 million tons to 142 million tons by 2030 through phased North Field development, alongside one of the industry’s largest LNG carrier construction programs.
