Hanwha plans giant ammonia carrier

June 4, 2025 |

In Korea, MK reports at the Nor-Shipping maritime trade fair in Oslo, South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean signed a memorandum of understanding with Korean Register to develop a 150,000-cubic-meter ammonia carrier—surpassing the current largest class of 93,000 cubic meters by more than 60 percent.

Ammonia emits no CO2 when burned and can be converted to hydrogen. Hanwha Ocean stated that it is “accelerating the commercialization of eco-ship technologies through strategic collaboration with global classification societies and key partners.” The company added, “We will enhance technical reliability through joint development projects and lead international eco-standards.”

Hanwha said it plans to concentrate its capabilities on environmentally friendly ship development. It also noted the need to prepare for future increases in ammonia transport volumes and stated its intention to take a leading role in the development of large-scale ammonia carriers.
