In South Korea, shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean and the Singapore-based Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonization announced a five-year strategic partnership aimed at advancing low- and zero-carbon solutions in the maritime sector. The collaboration will focus on alternative fuels, energy efficiency technologies, and onboard carbon capture, marking GCMD’s first partnership with a South Korean shipbuilder.
The alliance will leverage Hanwha Ocean’s expertise in green energy solutions, including ammonia-powered vessels, hydrogen, wind power, and LNG, alongside GCMD’s pilot projects and trials. Hanwha recently gained regulatory approval for its onboard carbon capture technology, while GCMD has completed successful ammonia transfer tests, paving the way for future ammonia bunkering.
This partnership strengthens efforts to meet the International Maritime Organization’s greenhouse gas targets. Professor Lynn Loo, CEO of GCMD said, “Hanwha Ocean and GCMD are addressing different parts of the value chain, whether in enabling ammonia as a marine fuel or further closing gaps in the onboard carbon capture value chain.”
Hanwha Ocean’s CTO, Young Chang Shon, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, emphasizing a commitment to carbon-neutral maritime solutions and economic value for the industry. This joint venture signals a major push towards sustainable shipping practices and aligns two industry leaders in the drive toward a greener future.
