In Chile, BNamericas reported that Guatemala’s state power company Inde launched bidding to determine the potential of using solid waste to generate electricity.

Prefeasibility studies will be carried out in the departments of Quetzaltenango (population 936,000), Retalhuleu (387,000), Zacapa (276,000) and Petén (640,000), according to the report.

The report added that the work will cover waste collection, characterization, calorific value, environmental impact and the selection of alternatives, among other areas.

Offers for the six-month contract are due in February, according to procurement information.

In October, the environment and natural resources ministry launched a national strategy for the transition towards a circular economy which targets solid waste.
