In Italy, the Grimaldi Group has taken delivery of the Grande Shanghai, the first of ten next-generation car carriers built by China Merchants Heavy Industries Jiangsu. With space for 9,000 vehicles, the vessel delivers twice the capacity of older ships while cutting fuel use by about half, according to the company.
The Grande Shanghai is the second vessel in Grimaldi’s fleet to carry an “Ammonia Ready” notation, allowing for future conversion to run on zero-carbon fuel. On board, energy-saving technologies enable lower emissions at sea and zero emissions during port calls where shore power is available.
The ship will make its maiden voyage in early September from Taicang, China, to Mombasa, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, carrying 7,000 meters of rolling cargo.
Managing Director Emanuele Grimaldi said the new vessel reflects the group’s “active and strong commitment to the ecological transition of shipping” and positions the company to serve the global automotive industry “with quality, efficiency, and sustainability.”
