In Italy, the Grimaldi Group announced the naming of Grande Shanghai on July 21, marking the debut of its first ammonia-ready car carrier. The ceremony took place in Haimen at the China Merchants Heavy Industries shipyard, where the 220-meter vessel was formally introduced by Italian Consul General Tiziana D’Angelo.
The ship is the first of ten new PCTCs ordered by Grimaldi, five of which will carry 9,000 car equivalent units, with the rest built for 9,800. Designed with Knud E. Hansen, Grande Shanghai combines capacity with high-efficiency systems that cut fuel consumption per cargo unit in half compared to earlier models.
Certified by Italian classification society RINA with an “Ammonia Ready” notation, the vessel can be converted to run on ammonia, a future-facing move toward zero-carbon transport. It also features 5 MWh of lithium battery storage, 2,500 square meters of solar panels, shore power compatibility, and a slew of emission-reduction systems including scrubbers, smart ventilation, and a dual-foil gate rudder.
