In Australia, a new report by GrainGrowers highlights the potential for grain and oilseed based low-carbon liquid fuels to strengthen sovereign fuel capability, reduce reliance on imports and support emission reduction goals.
The report, “Reaping the Benefits: How Australian Grain and Oilseeds Can Support Australia’s Low Carbon Fuel Security,” explores the strategic opportunities emerging as the world transitions away from fossil fuels and toward cleaner energy sources.
GrainGrowers CEO Shona Gawel said that with 91% of the country’s liquid fuels currently imported, and domestic stockholdings among the lowest in the OECD, Australia is highly exposed to global supply chain disruptions.
“In a crisis, access to fuel is more than just an economic issue; it’s a matter of national security. The recent global instability is an important reminder that Australia cannot afford to remain dependent on overseas supplies.”
The report outlines how Australia produces an abundance of crops suitable for biofuel production, including canola and other oilseeds capable of being converted into renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel.
“As a world-leading producer of grain and oilseeds, the feedstocks needed to power the next generation of low-carbon fuels are available, but without a national feedstock strategy and investment in refining infrastructure, we risk missing the opportunity to take advantage of that potential,” he added.
