In New York, the Trust for Governors Island has launched the Harbor Charger, the first hybrid-electric public ferry in New York State. The $33 million vessel began service August 13, coinciding with the island’s 20th anniversary open to the public.
Named through a citywide competition, the Harbor Charger can carry up to 1,200 passengers and 30 vehicles, and travel up to 66 percent faster than current ferries. It replaces the diesel-powered Lt. Samuel S. Coursen, in service since 1956.
“Twenty years ago, Governors Island opened to the public for the first time. Today, we are doubling down on that legacy with the launch of this first-of-its-kind electric ferry,” said Mayor Eric Adams.
The hybrid system, built by Siemens Energy, allows zero-emission, battery-only, or battery-assisted diesel operation. The Trust says it will cut nearly 600 tons of carbon dioxide annually, with an additional 800-ton reduction expected once shoreside charging is installed.
