Global Maritime Forum spotlights Kenya’s role in future e-fuel supply chain

September 11, 2025 |

In Denmark, the Global Maritime Forum released a new insight brief positioning Kenya as a promising producer of electro-fuels for the shipping sector. Titled Powering Clean Shipping: Kenya in the Global Power-to-X Economy, the report outlines how Kenya’s wind, solar, and geothermal resources could support competitive production of e-methanol and e-ammonia for both domestic vessels and global export markets.

The publication is the result of a year-long collaboration involving the Kenya Maritime Authority, GreenVoyage2050, UMAS, and national expert Dr. Evan Murimi, with funding from GIZ’s International Power-to-X Hub. Drawing on stakeholder interviews, technical analysis, and workshops in Mombasa and Nairobi, the study identifies key steps for scaling up production and use of zero-emission fuels.

Among the priorities outlined are cross-sector partnerships, green corridor development, and port-based pilot projects that could begin before 2030. Kenya Maritime Authority Director General Justus Omae Nyarandi said the shift toward e-fuels could strengthen trade links and reduce emissions for key exports like cut flowers and tea. The effort also aims to align Kenya’s shipping system with upcoming International Maritime Organization rules while building economic resilience through low-carbon energy investments.
