In Switzerland, the Global Ethanol Association on September 10 launched a new Marine Fuel Sector Initiative aimed at developing commercial pathways for ethanol as a low-emission marine fuel. The initiative invites stakeholders across the maritime fuel chain, including shipowners, asset financiers, ethanol producers, engine manufacturers, and classification societies, to join as founding members and shape the early market for ethanol bunkering.
The Association, a nonprofit based in Switzerland’s hub for international organizations, works to unify ethanol stakeholders across fuels, pharmaceuticals, food, chemicals, and other sectors. Its marine initiative aims to advance ethanol’s role in decarbonizing global shipping by promoting pilot projects, joint research, and coordinated engagement on regulation and infrastructure.
Founding members will gain access to policy briefings, commercial pilots, and business development opportunities tied to emerging demand for cleaner marine fuels. The Association emphasized the importance of early participation for those seeking to lead in a fuel transition that aligns with both climate targets and end-user needs. Ethanol, long used in road transport, now enters the maritime arena with a platform designed to turn innovation into adoption. The group is actively recruiting partners who want to turn industry momentum into scalable, practical fuel solutions for the ocean economy.
