Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation traces the truth in marine biofuels

August 28, 2025 |

In Singapore, on August 26, the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation released results from the world’s first real-world trials of tracer technologies in marine biofuel supply chains. Six trials conducted in major bunkering hubs, including Singapore and Rotterdam, tracked 10,400 metric tonnes of biofuel blends and confirmed a 24 percent cut in greenhouse gas emissions compared with conventional fuels.

The study tested three tracer technologies designed to verify the authenticity and volume of marine biofuels. Of these, an organic tracer proved the most practical, combining accuracy, stability, and low deployment costs. It was consistently detected at all sampling points and worked without disrupting operations or affecting fuel quality.

The trials respond to growing concerns over biofuel fraud, where adulterated fuels and double-counted emissions threaten both regulatory compliance and market integrity. Certification schemes such as ISCC and the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials exist but currently lack physical, field-level verification.
