Glander ramps up bio-LNG bunkering as emission rules shake up shipping

October 17, 2024 |

In Singapore, Manifold Times reports Glander International Bunkering is expanding its LNG and bio-LNG bunkering infrastructure across Europe and Asia, driven by decarbonization regulations such as the EU Emissions Trading System and the upcoming FuelEU Maritime regulations.

Mustafa El Zein, Glander’s New Fuels Advisor, noted that the big test for LNG as a bunker fuel will be how quickly bio- and synthetic LNG production can be scaled up while also addressing the price premium that shipowners must pay for these lower-carbon fuels. He added that regulations like the EU ETS are providing “an incentive for that switch”.

The expansion is not just limited to one region. While the ARA hub remains a major center, Southern Europe, including Spain, Portugal, and France, is developing rapidly. Additionally, significant investments are being made in Asia, with Singapore, Malaysia, and China enhancing their LNG capabilities. “LNG as a marine fuel is increasingly in the spotlight,” El Zein said, emphasizing its role as a lower-carbon alternative to traditional fuels.
