GEOMIT and CMAA sign MOU to develop cane-based biogas and biomethane projects

April 24, 2025 |

In Brazil, GEOMIT and Companhia Mineira de Açúcar e Álcool (CMAA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly develop commercial-scale biogas and biomethane projects from sugarcane residues, starting with the Vale do Tijuco Project, located in the Triângulo Mineiro region of Minas Gerais. The initiative aims to supply competitive, low-carbon natural gas to local industries and transport sectors, contributing to Brazil’s broader energy transition.

GEOMIT is a joint venture established in April 2024 between Mitsui Gás e Energia do Brasil (Mitsui Gás) and Geo bio gas&carbon (Geo). GEOMIT combines Mitsui Gás’s unparalleled presence in Brazil’s gas infrastructure — as a direct and indirect shareholder in 13 local gas distribution companies — with Geo’s proprietary and innovative biogas technologies, developed to efficiently convert solid and liquid agribusiness residues into high-quality biomethane.

This collaboration will focus on valorizing organic residues such as vinasse, filter cake, and bagasse, transforming them into clean energy through an advanced and sustainable anaerobic digestion process. The resulting biomethane will help diversify the energy mix in Minas Gerais, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and support the sustainable growth of Brazil’s agribusiness sector.
