Furetank completes first BioLNG bunkering

February 27, 2025 |

In Norway, Furetank bunkered 200 tonnes of ISCC-certified BioLNG onto its tanker Fure Viken at the Port of Mongstad, marking its first use of the fuel and aligning with new EU emissions rules, the company announced on February 26. The operation, conducted with STX Group and Molgas, supports compliance with FuelEU Maritime, which mandates a 2% reduction in greenhouse gas intensity for vessel fuel by 2025.

“We used biomethane of the highest environmental standard available in the market. This transaction marks a milestone in our transition to clean fuels,” said Furetank CEO Björn Stignor. The company has worked with fuel suppliers and ports for years to enable larger-scale liquefied biogas deliveries across Europe.

Molgas, making its first BioLNG bunker delivery to a maritime customer in Norway, sees demand rising. “We see a growing demand and interest in BioLNG, as it is one of the few renewable fuel solutions currently available in shipping,” said Gunnar Helmen, Director Marine at Molgas Nordics.

Furetank supports stricter regulations beyond Europe. “This bunkering is a major step on Furetank’s journey towards carbon neutrality,” said Viktoria Höglund, Sustainability Strategist at Furetank, adding that FuelEU Maritime “brings competitive advantages” for its dual-fuel fleet.
