Functional fungi: Hut shows potential for mycelium in construction

November 10, 2025 |

In South Korea, Yong Ju Lee Architecture has erected Mycelium Hut, a simple but habitable structure made of mycelium that demonstrates the potential for renewable materials in construction. Located on the campus of Seoul National University of Science and Technology, Mycelium Hut was made by growing mycelium into a custom mold made by 3D printing. It includes a supportive wood frame. The project demonstrates the potential for “robots and fungi working together,” according to Yanko Design. “Algorithms guiding organic growth. It’s the kind of collaboration that wouldn’t have made sense even a decade ago, but now feels inevitable.”
