In Finland, Fortum said it started the design of a small-scale hydrogen pilot plant in Loviisa, Finland.
In the project, hydrogen production is piloted for the use of industrial customers. According to the preliminary plans, the 1-2 megawatt electrolyzer plant would be placed in containers on a Fortum-owned area near the company’s Loviisa nuclear power plant. Fortum said it will make a possible investment decision on the pilot plant at a later stage.
“The design of the pilot plant supports the development of our hydrogen business. We have a lot of clean electricity production and we want to help industry to decarbonize and thereby meet the demand for clean products. Clean hydrogen is one of the key factors here,” said Mikko Muoniovaara, responsible for Fortum’s hydrogen projects in Finland.
A filling station is planned to be built in connection with the hydrogen pilot plant, where the hydrogen would be stored and from where it would be delivered to customers. Part of the hydrogen could be used in the production process of the Loviisa nuclear power plant, the company said.
