Fortescue to charter ammonia-fueled ore carrier from CMB.TECH

April 17, 2025 |

In Australia on April 17, Fortescue announced it will charter a 210,000 dwt ammonia-powered Newcastlemax vessel from Bocimar, part of Belgium-based CMB.TECH, by the end of 2026 to transport iron ore from the Pilbara to China and other markets—marking a step toward reducing its Scope 3 shipping emissions.

The dual-fuel ship will be capable of running on ammonia produced using renewable energy. Fortescue said the agreement is “a critical step in addressing our Scope 3 emissions,” and aligns with its broader goal of reaching net-zero Scope 3 emissions by 2040. The company has committed to eliminating Scope 1 and 2 emissions from its Australian iron ore operations by 2030.

“Our landmark agreement with Bocimar sends a clear signal to the market – now is the time for shipowners to invest in ammonia-powered ships,” said Fortescue Metals CEO Dino Otranto. “This is just the beginning.”

CMB.TECH CEO Alexander Saverys added, “This is the beginning of an exciting journey to build more ammonia-powered ships that will stimulate more green ammonia production projects.”

The deal follows the Fortescue Green Pioneer’s London debut earlier this year—the first class-approved dual-fuel ammonia vessel, now touring global ports to promote zero-emissions marine fuels.
