First methanol bunkering in Port of Amsterdam

May 21, 2025 |

In the Netherlands on May 13, 2025, Van Oord’s Boreas became the first vessel to receive 500 tons of green methanol via ship-to-ship bunkering in the Port of Amsterdam, using OCI HyFuels-supplied fuel delivered by Unibarge’s Chicago at TMA Logistics’ Amerikahaven terminal.

The Boreas is “the first ship of its kind that can sail on methanol,” equipped with “advanced emission control technology” and “a 6,000 kWh battery pack.” Jaap de Jong, project director at Van Oord, said: “We look forward to deploying this impressive ship for our offshore wind projects and further promoting the transition to renewable energy.”

Henri van der Weide, Clean Shipping advisor at Port of Amsterdam, said: “We are pleased that Van Oord has made the choice for methanol. This makes it an important precursor for us in the field of the use of sustainable fuels in shipping.”

“We do this in collaboration with the Clean Marine Fuels Working Group,” he added, which “developed, among other things, a safety checklist for bunkering.”

The port aims to become a Multi Fuel Port by enabling safe bunkering of methanol, LNG, hydrogen, and ammonia under international safety protocols.
