In Norway, Færder Tankers, a Norwegian shipping firm announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners to develop ammonia-fueled medium gas carriers for CiP’s clean ammonia projects, with the first 50,000-cubic-meter-capacity vessel expected by 2028.
These next-generation ships will feature dual-fuel ammonia engines, advanced maneuverability, and full bunkering capabilities, enabling green transportation of ammonia as both cargo and fuel. The vessels will support CiP’s clean energy portfolio, which includes ~10 GW of electrolyzer projects for producing green and blue ammonia.
“This marks a monumental step toward achieving our shared vision of sustainable maritime transportation,” said Capt. Paal Stenberg, CEO of Færder Tankers. “These innovative vessels represent a breakthrough in design and functionality, combining state-of-the-art dual-fuel ammonia engines, superior maneuverability, and unparalleled bunkering capabilities—all within the trusted framework of today’s MGCs.”
Niels H. Lindegaard, Senior Business Advisor at CiP, stated, “Our objective is to facilitate the green transportation of clean ammonia by utilizing the cargo as fuel. Partnering with innovative shipping companies like BW Epic Kosan and Færder Tankers is crucial to achieving this goal.”
