EVREC’s green hydrogen project in Central Newfoundland gets guidelines for environmental impact statement

April 17, 2025 |

In Canada, Abraxas Power Corp. and its subsidiary Exploits Valley Renewable Energy Corporation (EVREC), announced that Newfoundland and Labrador’s Department of Environment and Climate Change has released the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) guidelines for the Green Energy Hub project in the Botwood area. The project aims to harness renewable energy sources to produce hydrogen in a sustainable and environmentally responsible manner, the firm said. The purpose of the EIS is to identify for all phases of the project (construction, operation and maintenance, decommissioning and rehabilitation) the important beneficial and adverse environmental effects associated with the project, measures to mitigate adverse effects, the significance of residual environmental effects, public concerns and the response to those concerns, the firm added. EVREC will include up to 3+ gigawatts (GW) of onshore wind capacity with associated energy and molecular storage to power behind-the-meter green hydrogen and green ammonia production. The project anticipates generating nearly 180,000 tons of green hydrogen and nearly 1,000,000 tons of green ammonia annually.
