In South Korea, Global Economics reports Taiwan’s Evergreen Marine is considering ordering eleven 24,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships from South Korean and Chinese shipyards, with each vessel priced at over $250 million, bringing the total investment to $2.75 billion, according to reporting by LNG Prime on the 22nd. The move marks a shift from last year’s $5.04 billion order for 24 methanol dual-fuel ships.
A major shipbuilding executive stated, “The competition between South Korean and Chinese shipyards for Evergreen’s 24,000 TEU LNG-powered container ship order will be intense.” According to Clarkson Research, South Korean yards secured 113 out of 158 LNG vessel orders in 2023, accounting for 71.5% of the market.
With the IMO’s 2050 net-zero emissions target, demand for green ships is rising. Lloyd’s Register shipping analyst Mark Darcey noted at a maritime conference on the 22nd, “LNG can cut carbon emissions by 20–25%, but a shift to zero-carbon fuels like hydrogen or ammonia will be necessary to meet 2050 goals.”
