In Bulgaria, Renewables Now reported that the European Commission presented its European Grids Package and the Energy Highways initiative, which are aimed at lowering energy prices and supporting Europe’s energy independence.
The report noted that the proposals seek to maximize the use of existing infrastructure and, at the same time, provide for faster development of grids. They include accelerating permitting procedures and ensuring a fairer division of costs regarding cross-border projects.
The eight Energy Highways, announced by President Ursula von der Leyen in her State of the Union 2025, tackle urgent energy bottlenecks across Europe. For instance, they include electricity interconnections across the Pyrenees, two hydrogen corridors and Bornholm Energy Island.
The two hydrogen corridors are the SouthH2 Corridor involving Tunisia, Italy, Austria and Germany and the Southwest hydrogen corridor from Portugal to Germany.
