EU-ETS compliance costs for ships hit 100% as of Jan. 1st

In Belgium, Ship & Bunker reports that as of Jan. 1, EU Emissions Trading System compliance costs jumped by 45% to $319 per metric ton of marine fuel burned, up from about $220/mt on Dec. 31. When the EU-ETS came into effect in 2024, ship owners only had to pay about 40% of compliance costs, which rose to 70% in 2025 but as of Jan. 1 2026, 100% of those compliance costs must be paid.
