In Texas, Ireland’s ETFuels has launched front-end engineering design for its flagship Rattlesnake Gap e-methanol project. The plant is expected to produce 1,000 tons of e-methanol per day, making it the largest commercial-scale facility of its kind in the U.S.
Houston-based S&B Engineers and Constructors is leading FEED. Electrolyzers will come from John Cockerill’s Baytown factory, and Johnson Matthey’s eMERALD technology will be used to synthesize methanol. The project will operate on a behind-the-meter model, integrating renewable energy directly into production.
ETFuels says the facility will serve shipping markets and meet compliance demand under Europe’s FuelEU Maritime regulation. The company is positioning Texas as a transatlantic supply hub for e-fuels.
Since launching less than three years ago, ETFuels has developed a portfolio across the U.S., UK, Spain, and Finland totaling over 2.5 GW of renewables. Rattlesnake Gap is one of the few global e-fuels projects to reach FEED.
