Environmentalists call out dropping ILUC in SAF tax credit extension bill

June 3, 2025 |

In Washington, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports some environmentalists are worried about the bill U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar and U.S. Sen. Roger Marshall introduced in April that would protect the tax credit for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), created by the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, and extend for another 10 years while prohibiting imported feedstocks from benefiting. But environmentalists are worried about the part of the bill that removes how the federal government evaluates the environmental benefits and costs of those fuels including indirect land use change. Klobuchar alleges it’s not necessary since imported feedstocks that would potentially lead to ILUC, such as impacts on Brazilian rainforests, are excluded.
