In China, Ammonia Energy reports Energy China’s Hydrogen Energy subsidiary is preparing to begin operations this September at one of the country’s most ambitious green fuel facilities. Located in Jilin province, the first phase of the Songyuan Hydrogen Energy Industrial Park will produce 200,000 tons of renewable ammonia annually, powered by 800 MW of wind and solar backed by battery and hydrogen storage. The site will also produce 35,000 tons of green hydrogen each year.
With $1 billion in total investment, the project is 80% complete. Trial operations will begin once the remaining electrolyzers are commissioned. Ammonia synthesis and storage units are already in place, along with the solar field and most of the wind turbines.
Built to run off-grid and to comply with the European Union’s renewable fuels of non-biological origin criteria, the plant uses what CEEC calls a “multi-stable flexible control strategy” to align ammonia production with the variability of renewable power. A joint R&D center with Peking University’s Sunan Institute supports ongoing optimization.
From Songyuan, ammonia will move 630 kilometers by truck to Panjin Port, where CEEC co-owns a terminal with refrigerated storage and a berth for 50,000 DWT vessels. Rail shipments and a larger expansion phase are scheduled for 2027.
