This demonstration will involve a pretreatment process developed by TOPPAN Holdings that removes unnecessary parts from difficult-to-recycle waste paper, such as waterproof paper and carbonless paper, to turn it into a fiber-rich raw material.
Combining this with continuous ethanol production technology developed by ENEOS will allow for scaling up. Nippon Paper Industries will provide part of the Fuji Mill site and will be responsible for operating part of the pilot plant (saccharification and fermentation process). The pilot plant is expected to have an input of approximately 1-3 t/day of recovered paper and produce approximately 300 L/day of bioethanol. Operation is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2027, and knowledge gained through this demonstration project will be utilized with the aim of commercializing the project from fiscal 2030 onwards.
