Enagás terminals set to pump out BioLNG

February 27, 2025 |

In Spain, Enagás will launch BioLNG supply operations in March at its Barcelona and Huelva regasification terminals, allowing biomethane injected into the gas grid to be recognized as BioLNG and loaded onto ships and tankers. The terminals meet International Sustainability and Carbon Certification and European Commission standards, enabling the company to contribute to European decarbonization objectives.

The move builds on over a decade of Enagás’ work in maritime fuel projects, including Core LNGas Hive and LNGas Hive 2, and investments in small-scale infrastructure to adapt its terminals to market demand. The company has also played a role in developing regulations for ship refueling systems.

LNG bunkering activity in Spain has grown ninefold since 2022, reaching 3.8 TWh in 2024. Barcelona and Huelva terminals have handled nearly all LNG bunkering in Spain, surpassing 300 refuelings of small-scale vessels. Enagás says the new BioLNG service will further solidify this growth while advancing cleaner maritime fuel solutions.
