Embrapa studies reinfoce scientific basis of the National Biofuels Policys

January 29, 2026 |

In Brazil, new studies led by Embrapa Ambiente reinforce the scientific basis of the National Biofuels Policy (RenovaBio) and expand transparency on the carbon intensity of biofuels produced in the country. The articles, published in international open access journals, fill technical gaps and strengthen the global understanding of how Brazil calculates the carbon intensity of ethanol, biodiesel and biogas, in addition to revealing significant variations in emissions associated with agricultural production in different states.

In addition to the technical note, Embrapa and Unicamp published a study on the carbon footprint of soybeans, corn and sugar cane — crops that account for more than 80% of the area planted in the country and are essential for food, feed and biofuels. The work consolidates data submitted by producers to RenovaBio, in the case of cane, and information collected from farmers and agronomists for soybeans and corn.
