DNV approves SeaTech, Oceania design for Pilbara ammonia bunker vessel

June 26, 2025 |

In Norway, DNV awarded an Approval in Principle to SeaTech Solutions and Oceania Marine Energy for a 10,000-cubic-meter ammonia bunkering vessel to be deployed at the Port of Dampier, Australia, as part of a low-emissions fuel strategy aimed at supplying bulk carriers operating between the Pilbara and North Asia.

The 130-meter vessel is designed to deliver up to 9,000 cubic meters of low-carbon ammonia in ship-to-ship transfers, enough for two round-trips to Asia. The AiP follows an April 2025 memorandum of understanding between DNV, SeaTech, and Oceania during Singapore Maritime Week.

Oceania Managing Director Nick Bentley said the vessel “marks a major milestone in developing the supply and bunker operation foundations for the low-carbon shipping Pilbara–Asia green-corridor.”

The Port of Dampier completed its first ammonia ship-to-ship transfer in September 2024 and is positioning itself as a regional fuel hub.

SeaTech Vice President Prabjot Singh Chopra emphasized the vessel’s “high level of automation and smart control systems to ensure safe handling of ammonia.”

DNV called the project “another step in realizing operationally ready bunkering capabilities,” and noted that scaling up ammonia infrastructure remains a major hurdle in the maritime energy transition.
