DNV approves ammonia fueled mega boxship design from MSC and partners

December 4, 2025 |

In China, DNV has granted Approval in Principle to MSC, Zhoushan Changhong International, and CIMC ORIC for a new 21,700 TEU ammonia dual fuel container ship, presented during Marintec 2025. The design features advanced ammonia engines, large C type fuel tanks, and a high efficiency hull shaped through model testing and computational simulations.

The vessel includes a vertical bow, optimized stern lines, low resistance coatings, and energy saving features aimed at improving fuel efficiency. A twin island deck layout allows for extra 40 foot container bays while maintaining port compatibility. DNV’s review covered safety systems, fuel handling, and the overall propulsion arrangement, confirming that the concept meets current standards and is technically feasible.

“This vessel concept offers shipowners an option for high capacity, energy efficient, zero carbon container ship,” said CIMC ORIC General Manager Yin Xunbin. DNV’s Norbert Kray noted that ammonia fueled vessels have moved “from concept to orders,” highlighting the project’s role in making large scale decarbonization tangible.

With Approval in Principle now secured, the consortium will move into detailed design and safety analysis. The project adds momentum to ammonia’s growing role in long distance container shipping, aligned with new fuel regulations and emission targets.
