In Germany, the DBFZ, in collaboration with partners, has published a comprehensive monitoring report on ‘Renewable energies in transport’, analyzing the current status of the energy transition in the transport sector across Germany, Europe, and worldwide. The report emphasizes the transport sector’s critical role in achieving climate neutrality goals by 2050, noting it contributes approximately 20% of annual greenhouse gas emissions. However, global transport emissions have increased significantly since 1990, and further growth is expected. In Germany, the necessary transformation in the transport sector is slow, and climate targets are unlikely to be met soon. The study identifies avoiding transport, shifting to climate-friendly alternatives, and transitioning to renewable fuels and alternative powertrain systems as essential steps. While electrification is vital, current rates in Germany are insufficient. Renewable fuels are indispensable for hard-to-electrify sectors, but global production needs to increase dramatically to meet future demand.
