In Australia, NH3 Clean Energy, Pilbara Ports Authority, and Oceania Marine Energy signed a Joint Development Agreement to establish low-emissions ammonia bunkering operations at the Port of Dampier by 2030, aiming to support decarbonization along the Pilbara–Asia iron ore shipping corridor and supply up to 600,000 tons per year of clean ammonia.
The plan focuses on serving ammonia-fueled bulk carriers of which sixteen could consume nearly all of NH3’s planned WAH2 Phase 1 output. Pilbara Ports, which handled over 750 million tonnes of bulk cargo last year, will oversee port safety and bunkering licenses. NH3 will supply ammonia from its WAH2 project, and Oceania will operate bunker vessels conducting ship-to-ship transfers.
“This agreement sets a pathway for WA to become a global leader in the decarbonisation of maritime transport,” said NH3 Chairman Charles Whitfield. Pilbara Ports CEO Sam McSkimming noted, “The green iron corridor… has the scale, stable demand, port infrastructure, and risk management experience, to support the significant investment that maritime decarbonisation requires.” Oceania’s Nick Bentley added, “We are laying the foundation for an at-scale ammonia bunkering operation.”
Final investment decisions for infrastructure, vessels, and ammonia supply are targeted by the end of 2026.
