In the UK, Fuel Cells Works reported that CrossWind, the joint venture between energy giants Shell and Eneco, has confirmed that its pioneering Baseload Power Hub (BLPH) has officially produced its first batch of hydrogen.
CrossWind said: “Hydrogen has officially been introduced in the Baseload Power Hub. From brainstorm to breakthrough, the BLPH is now live and producing H2.”
This announcement follows the completion of construction in April 2025 of what CrossWind describes as the world’s first offshore hydrogen production and storage platform specifically designed for marine operating conditions.
The platform integrates a 2.5MW electrolyzer for hydrogen production, hydrogen storage systems, and equipment for converting the stored hydrogen back into electricity. This hybrid setup works in tandem with a 5MWh battery system, allowing the platform to smooth out both hourly and daily fluctuations in wind energy output, according to the report.
