In China, China Water Transport Network reported on September 25 in Shanghai, COSCO Shipping’s 20,000-TEU container ship Tianqin Zuo was delivered after a more than three-month retrofit, marking the world’s largest methanol dual-fuel conversion to date and the first to simultaneously upgrade both main and auxiliary engines, with China Classification Society overseeing the project as its first methanol dual-fuel inspection.
CCS said the project “set multiple industry records”, including the world’s first retrofit of an 11-cylinder main engine for methanol fuel. The classification society assembled a dedicated technical team to manage risks, verify quality, and coordinate closely with the shipowner, shipyard, and designers throughout the process.
Shanghai’s record-breaking summer heat tested the resilience of on-site inspectors and engineers. CCS’s team worked “under the ‘grilling’ of extreme heat”, adhering strictly to standards while helping resolve technical bottlenecks during installation and commissioning.
The retrofit is intended as a demonstration of scalable low-emissions solutions for large vessels, aligning with China’s maritime peak carbon, carbon neutrality strategy. CCS stated it will “continue refining technology and improving service capabilities” in pursuit of global maritime decarbonization.
