In China, COSCO SHIPPING LINES has completed the first conversion of an Everllence S90-class engine to operate on methanol fuel. The retrofit was carried out by COSCO SHIPPING HEAVY INDUSTRY on board the 20,000+ TEU container vessel COSCO SHIPPING LIBRA, which is now equipped with a dual-fuel system capable of running on methanol.
The project was a full-scope collaboration involving engineering, installation, and commissioning led by Everllence’s after-sales division, PrimeServ. As part of the program, Everllence developed a dedicated testbed in Japan to validate the methanol performance of its large-bore engine class under real operating conditions.
This marks the first time an Everllence S90-class engine has been converted for methanol operation, and could pave the way for similar retrofits. More than 300 ships globally use the same engine class and may be eligible for conversion.
