COP 29: maritime leaders rally for 2030 green fuel targets

November 13, 2024 |

At COP 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, over 50 stakeholders from across the maritime industry – including e-fuel producers, vessel and cargo owners, ports, and equipment manufacturers – signed a Call to Action to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission fuels, targeting at least 5% and striving for 10% by 2030. Led by RMI, the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions, the UCL Energy Institute, and the UN Foundation, the initiative seeks to make green fuels the industry standard.

“The greater the demand for low carbon hydrogen — such as from chemical plants, refineries, and shipping fuels — the greater the incentive for investments in low carbon hydrogen production. This increased demand will drive the technological development of hydrogen and help reduce its production costs,” said Philip Julien, founder and chairman of Kenesjay Green.

“Maritime shipping connects the world, and the industry has a unique opportunity to lead global climate mitigation efforts by committing to green fuels,” said Marco Raffinetti, CEO at Hyphen Hydrogen Energy, emphasizing Namibia’s role in producing sustainable fuels for the shipping sector.

As ports and financiers also commit to green hydrogen projects, the industry signals a readiness to make low-emission shipping a reality, preparing for global regulatory frameworks expected in 2025.
