CMA CGM takes delivery of first China-built methanol-powered containership

December 18, 2025 |

In China, Sina Finance reports CMA CGM has taken delivery of the CMA CGM Antigone, its first methanol-powered containership built domestically, marking a milestone in the company’s decarbonization strategy. The 15,000-TEU vessel was handed over at Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai on December 11 and is the lead ship in a six-vessel series ordered by the French shipping group.

Named after a figure from French classical theatre, Antigone is designed to meet the world’s most stringent emissions standards and will operate on the BEX2 service between Asia, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean. CMA CGM said the ship exemplifies its twin strategy of improving energy efficiency and expanding the use of alternative fuels.

By 2031, the company aims to operate around 200 dual-fuel vessels capable of running on low-carbon fuels. The Antigone is a key step toward CMA CGM’s 2050 net-zero target and showcases growing collaboration between French shipowners and Chinese builders in scaling clean propulsion technologies.

At the naming ceremony, CMA Ships VP Xavier Leclercq praised the vessel’s environmental performance and acknowledged strategic partnerships and long-time advisor Wu Hui for her decades of contribution to the company’s growth.
